Author Biography

  • E. Annamalai, Yale University

    E.Annamalai currently teaches Tamil at Yale. He has taught this language as a second language to English speaking adults at Annamalai University and the University of Chicago. As Deputy Director and then as Director at the Central Institute of Indian languages, Mysore, India, he designed curricula for teaching Indian languages as a first language in primary schools and as a second language to adult teachers, secondary school students and learners in distance education and online courses. He has conducted research and published papers on language in education, language pedagogy and adult literacy. His recent book in this area (with R.E. Asher) is Colloquial Tamil (Routledge, 2003). Other research areas, in which he has published extensively, are language description, language change and language policy.
