A Transitivity Analysis of Seven Lessons (Texts) of Biology 8

Abstract

In this article, an attempt is made to explore in some depth the transitivity features of seven lessons (texts) of a Vietnamese science textbook – Sinh h?c 8 (Biology 8). The findings show that in constructing biological knowledge in their texts, the Vietnamese biologists as textbook writers have employed very high frequency of material and relational processes, virtually no behavioural process, very low percentage of mental, verbal and existential processes, relative small number of circumstances, high percentage of participants/Subjects, high lexical density, high frequency of grammatical metaphor, and only two types of expansion clause complex: elaboration and enhancement. These transitivity features constitute part of what Halliday (2005a: 59) refers to as the ‘prototypical syndrome’ that characterizes the language of Vietnamese school science textbooks. They explain in part why the language of school science textbooks often creates a feeling of ‘alienation’ (Halliday and Martin, 1993: 2) to school students.

  • Van Van Hoang, VNU University of Languages and International Studies

    Hoang Van Van is currently professor in linguistics at VNU University of Languages and International Studies. He received his doctorate in Linguistics from Macquarie University, Sydney, Australia. He is well-known for his research in the application of Systemic Functional Theory to the description of Vietnamese and to the analysis of the translation process from English into Vietnamese. He is general editor and an author of the two national English textbook series for schools in Vietnam: the English textbook series for Vietnamese upper secondary schools (currently in use in schools throughout Vietnam) and the 10-year English textbook series for schools in Vietnam under the Vietnamese Government’s National Foreign Languages 2020 Project (currently being trailed in selected schools in Vietnam). He has published 14 books and over 70 journal articles and book chapters in English and Vietnamese on Systemic Functional Linguistics, EFL curriculum design, English language teaching, translation studies, and discourse analysis.
