Exploring the Meta Operation Mechanism of Metaphor below a Word

Zili Chen
Issued Date: 14 Jun 2010

Abstract

Conceptual Metaphor Theory argues that metaphor is a matter of cognition in a cross-domain manner. This theory set in motion a new wave of research on metaphor theory which focuses on the behavior and function of metaphors in different environments. The current study proposes another approach to exploring a word’s Metaphor Making Potential. Specifically, the paper suggests that an ontology-based approach to metaphor evaluation is de facto more objective and operable than an intuitive-based approach in providing insights into a word’s metaphor-making potential.
