Abstract

The contours of European intellectual thought had, by the start of the nineteenth century, culminated in the contested concept of modernity. This paper traces the interpretation of that concept and shows how it created conditions that were later important to British Pentecostalism. Many of these conditions were embodied in the life and thought of John Wesley.
