Abstract

Recent years have witnessed increasing interest in both history and stardom within Popular Music Studies. Yet one of the major sites for the production of commercial popular muisc since the 1960s – the UK – still lacks a comprehensive social history of its contribution to this artform. In particular the history of early UK rock and roll and its attendant stardom has been somewhat neglected. This article uses Richard Peterson’s production of culture thesis as a means by which to explore both early UK rock and roll stardom and the thesis itself.
