Computer-Mediated Collocation: Resources for Exploring Word Choice in English Academic Writing

Abstract

This article introduces teachers to some freely available online resources designed to help writers – those of all skill levels, especially language learners – with collocation. It shows how wildcard searches in search engines, online corpora, and concordance tools can be used to check and explore collocations in writing.

Ulugbek Nurmukhamedov, Northern Arizona University

Ulugbek Nurmukhamedov is a Doctoral candidate in Applied Linguistics at Northern Arizona University (NAU). He received his M.A. TESL degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) and has taught ESL reading, writing and vocabulary courses at the intensive English programs at both UIUC and NAU. His research interests include lexicon, corpus-based vocabulary analysis, and computer-assisted language learning. Nurmukhamedov’s articles have appeared in ELT Journal, Writing & Pedagogy, and Language Teaching FORUM.
Andrea R Olinger, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

Andrea R. Olinger is a doctoral candidate in English/Writing Studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She received her Master’s degree in Applied Linguistics and TESL from UCLA and has taught ESL writing, first-year composition, and advanced composition. Olinger’s research interests include style and register, writing across the curriculum/in the disciplines, and L1 and L2 writing pedagogy. Her work has been published in Linguistics and Education and Teaching English in the Two-Year College.
