Abstract

This paper describes a method in oral fluency evaluation for Tourism English according to a corpus-based lexical approach. Our main research focus is placed on measuring oral skill competence among Tourism English (TE) learners by contrasting their word use and linguistic fluency, achieved in two types of oral tasks, with corpus data frequencies. Information Technology (IT) resources and electronic corpora are two integrated tools in the evaluative approach to identify significant performance changes between learners who have managed such electronic resources and learners who have not.

  • Alejandro Curado Fuentes, University of Extremadura

    Alejandro Curado Fuentes is a Senior Lecturer at University of Extremadura, Spain, where he has been teaching English for Specific Purposes (ESP) since 1995. His main research interests include corpus linguistics, lexical analysis, information technologies, and ESP methodology. His doctoral thesis (2000) relied on corpus-based tools for lexical analysis and classification in ESP. Among others, his publications include articles in the journals Langue (1999), Ibérica (2000), Language Learning & Technology (2001), ICAME (2002), and ReCALL (2003) and two books: A lexical common core in English for information science and technology (2002) and El lenguaje de la ciencia de la información (2003).
