Abstract

The program TOPIC is primarily designed for the acquisition and practice of topical vocabulary in context. It bridges the gap between ready made "learnware" and authoring packages by meeting the requirements of the teachers: 1) to decide on the sequence of exercises and the kind of material offered for help; 2) to deal with language material only — and not with program control sequences; And of the learners: 1) to be offered a variety of exercises relating to one topic and one body of text; 2) to work with a program able to process language alternatives and to give meaningful comments on the learner's input.
