Abstract

On the initiative of a group of young and ambitious musicians, the JazzWerkstatt collectives were founded in the Austrian cities of Vienna and Graz in 2004 and 2007 respectively in order to create a workshop environment and performance opportunity for young musicians. The JazzWerkstatt platform’s activities include the organization of annual festivals, performances at national and international venues, the foundation of the record label, JazzWerkstatt Records, and a cooperation with the pan-European ‘ZOOM!’ collective. Based on interviews, this article examines the structure and development of the two branches of this successful Austrian initiative.
