Sibling Mediation of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders

Abstract

This study describes mediational strategies used by two siblings of children with autism spectrum disorders during social contexts. Two playgroups, including one child with autism, one typically developing sibling, and a third friend were observed during multiple play interactions. Interactional data between the child with autism and the typically developing sibling were collected and analyzed using video analysis and participant observation within a qualitative paradigm. This report describes four mediational strategies that the typically developing siblings used with the child with autism during play, including exaggerated voices, following the lead of the child with autism, use of semantic schema, and context clarification. Despite the communicative impairments of children with autism, siblings can employ multiple strategies to successfully mediate social interactions.

  • Kathleen J. Abendroth, Southeastern Louisiana University

    Kathleen J. Abendroth, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, is an assistant professor in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at Southeastern Louisiana University. She earned her BA at the University of Virginia and her Ph.D. at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Dr Abendroth’s research interests include autism spectrum disorders and examining social implications for individuals with high functioning autism and Asperger’s syndrome. Other areas of interest include language disorders, literacy development, and cultural diversity issues related to language assessment and intervention. Dr Abendroth has worked as an SLP in the East Baton Rouge Parish Public School System serving students ages 3‒18 and as a clinical supervisor at the Southeastern Louisiana University Speech, Language, and Hearing Clinic. She is currently a member of the American Speech-language-hearing Association (ASHA) and the Louisiana Speech-language-hearing Association (LSHA).
