Author Biography

  • Thomas C. Patterson, Temple University, Philadelphia
    Thomas C. Patterson is Professor of Anthropology and History at Temple University. He received a PhD degree in anthropology from the University of California at Berkeley. He has been a research scholar at the Center for Research in the Humanities at Copenhagen University and a visiting scholar at the University of Peurto Rico and Western Michigan University. His current research focuses on long-term processes of class and state formation, classical and contemporary social thought and its use by archaeologists, the history of anthropology and archaeology, and the socio-politics and political economy of archaeology in the 20th century. He is the author of 'Inventing Western Civilization', 'Change and Development in the Twentieth Century', and 'Toward a Social History of Archaeology in the United States'; he is co-editor of 'Making Alternative Histories: The Practice of Archaeology and History in Non-Western Settings', and 'Race, Racism and the History of U.S. Anthropology'.
