Teaching Japanese Syllabary With Visual And Verbal Mnemonics

Abstract


Courseware to teach Japanese syllabary (Hiragana and Katakana) has been developed and used with beginning learners of Japanese. The method used for the courseware is adapted from "Hiragana in 48 minutes" (Quackenbush & Ohso 1983), which uses mnemonics to help associate the shape and sound of letters.
