Abstract

This article sheds some light on three genres of music with mainly non-Asian roots: krontjong, Hawaiian and Indorock. The first two were particularly popular in Indonesia in the years before (and immediately following) independence. Migrants from the newly independent Indonesia, or 'repatriants' as they were called in the 1950s, brought these styles with them to the Netherlands as part of their cultural heritage. The third style - lndorock - was created in the Netherlands by former inhabitants of the Indonesian archipelago. All three are still being practiced in the Netherlands, all three sound familiar to western ears and have a certain eastern flavour.
