Abstract

This article presents a review of the main historical facts that have transformed Portuguese into an international language. There is also a general overview of the present situation of the language in the world and the difficulties it faces to reach an outstanding position among the other international languages. Finally, there is a discussion of the main discursive formulations about the lusophony and the controversies it has aroused.

Author Biography

  • Carlos Alberto Faraco, Universidade Federal do Parana
    Carlos Alberto Faraco is Professor of Linguistics and Portuguese at the Universidade Federal do Paraná (Curitiba, Brasil). He has got his Ph.D. In Linguistics in 1982 (Salford University) and has been a Visiting Researcher at the University of California in 1995-96. He has worked with Romance Linguistics and more recently with Language Politics. Some of his publications are: Norma Culta Brasileira: desatando alguns nós (S. Paulo: Parábola, 2008), Linguagem & Diálogo: as ideias linguísticas do Círculo de Bakhtin (S. Paulo: Parábola, 2009), Linguística Histórica: uma introdução ao estudo da história das línguas (S. Paulo: Parábola, 2005). He has organized the book Estrangeirismos: guerras em torno da língua (S. Paulo: Parábola, 2001).
