6. Description Abstract The rise of public sanctuaries is put into a long-term perspective. With the aid of geostatistical analyses on a very large sample, patterned variability of sanctuaries locations is addressed, in relation to developmental models of Nuragic settlements systems, through the Bronze and Early Iron Ages (2nd – early 1st millennia BC). A comparable analytical framework is setup for contemporary regional settings in Italian Peninsula, in order to identify similarities and divergences.

The analytical framework is conceived to provide an empirical perspective on the often claimed emergence of “confederations” around 1000 BC.
