6. Description Abstract The aim of this paper is to examine the online recontextualization (Bernstein 1996) of a digital figure, first published as part of a research article in both the paper and online editions of the New England Journal of Medicine (Bernard et al. 2001). In its original digital environment, the figure, like others in the journal, is not only part of a composite text; it is also a discrete text in its own right, one that can be searched, downloaded, read, and redistributed in various formats (e.g. JPG, PPT).
