6. | Description | Abstract | The chapter presents the link between personal, national and social identity and food. This association is illustrated in cinema, television and literature. The chapter presents several case studies: a Mexican movie (Primero soy mexicano), excerpts from Benito Pérez Galdós’s Torquemada y San Pedro, Emilia Pardo Bazán’s Los Pazos de Ulloa, and Fernán Caballero’s La familia de Alvareda. In addition, the chapter considers the Cuban television show created and presented by Nitza Villapol, along with the short documentary Con pura magia satisfechos that describes the role of the television show in Cuba during periods of scarcity. The chapter also presents gazpacho as a focus food, with texts that describe its origins and its cultural significance along with easy recipes. There is a section discussing food and the media, with an analysis of food advertising in early and contemporary television commercials. |
