6. Description Abstract This chapter examines the unwillingness of most textbooks on Islam to deal with issues of violence, terrorism, or similar issues. I will do this through an autobiographical account of how I came to write my own textbook—Muslim Identities: An Introduction to Islam (New York: Columbia University Press, 2014)—as a response to these others.
